It is celebrated on the third Saturday of May with military exercises on land, at sea, and in the air.

4th Annual Texas Yamboree Airshow
was held Saturday and Sunday October 4-5 2003
Sunday's show was rained out.

4th Annual Texas Yamboree Airshow
Saturday and Sunday Oct 3-4 2003 was a huge success!

Airshow performers scheduled were Greg Shelton and his Aerobatic T-6 Texan routine, Jan Collmer and his Fina Extra 300L, Steve Culp and his awesome WW I Sopwith Pup replica, and returning by popular demand, Randy and Di Henderson and the Texas T-Cart. Adding to the excitement and color this year was Neal Darnel’s Little Red Jet Truck. The grand finale of the show featured the Jet Truck in a race with Greg Shelton's T-6 Texan. Adding interest for airshow buffs was the attendance of Marion Cole and Corky Fornoff, two Air Show Hall of Fame members.

The Stealth Fighter and the Stealth Bomber will made appearances in Gilmer this year.
The F-117 "Nighthawk" Stealth Fighter has been a regular at Gilmer shows, except in 2002, when severe weather in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico prevented the fly-over. The "Nighthawk" was scheduled to appear for the Saturday show.

The main theme of the show was to honor all veterans and especially the Korean War Veterans, since 2003 is the 50th Commemorative of the Korean War. Texas native George O'Brien, USMC Medal of Honor Recipient, Korean War.....Battle for Pork Chop Hill....was our honored military VIP. Air Force Pilot graduates of Reese AFB Class 66-C will also were present to help honor all veterans.

The 4th Poster Art. R.T. Foster, our artist from Oklahoma City created this original piece for the centerpiece of the show poster. Depicting the Northrop T-38 "Talon" supersonic advanced USAF jet trainer, the Talon's have been used as the advanced USAF jet trainer since 1963. With planned upgrades and modifications, the T-38 will serve as the front line fighter/trainer until the year 2030.

The B-2 Spirit.
There are 33 B-2 "Spirit" in the USAF arsenal. Based at Whiteman AFB in Missouri, the B-2's gained most recent recognition in the war in Afghanistan, flying 33 hour non-stop round trip bombing missions from Missouri to Afghanistan and back.

Spring Fly-In held at Fox Stephens Field

THIS 1941 STEARMAN biplane, flown by Hugh Hunton and Bob Kendrick, was one of several vintage aircraft that delighted guests at the Fly-In Saturday at Fox Stephens Field. All branches of the service used this plane as a primary flight trainer. It belongs to the Lone Star Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, based in Marshall.

Flight of the Phoenix Museum at Fox Stephens Field at Gilmer sponsored a Spring Fly-In and Museum Open House Saturday that was enjoyed by local guests and visiting pilots.
The event was staged as a preliminary to the 2003 Yamboree Air Show, to be held Oct. 3-4, and as a “thank you” to air show sponsors and museum volunteers.
During and after a lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs, the guests enjoyed seeing the vintage aircraft that flew in from around North and East Texas.
Aviation highlight was the acrobatic performance by veteran pilot Randy Henderson in his Texas T-Cart, a highly modified 1946 clipped-wing Taylorcraft BC-12D.
Henderson, whose wife Diana took the microphone to explain his maneuvers, operates out of Cotton Patch Aerodrome, a grass strip in Frisco. His shows featuring old-time barnstorming aerobatics leave crowds gasping as his daring dives appear to flirt with disaster.
Steve Dean, Air Show director who served as master or ceremonies, noted that the Texas T-Cart will again highlight this year’s Yamboree Air Show.
Formation flying in World War II era North American training planes was provided by Carl Best and Steve Afeman, both regulars at Gilmer aviation events.
Best, a commercial insurance executive from Plano, flies a pristine 1943 AT-6C, remanufactured as an AT-6G in 1951. It served the Air Force at Georgia training fields until 1951,when it was declared surplus.
Flying for owners in Alaska, California and Michigan, she found a home in the Best family when Carl’s Dad Henry bought her in 1966. Henry often fills the rear cockpit and flies co-pilot with Carl.
Carl’s back seater Saturday was Fred Handelmann, a Lufthansa MD-11 Captain and Harvard pilot in Germany.
Steve Afeman of McKinney flies a blue Navy SNJ-5B. Steve flies first officer on Airbus A-320’s for a major air carrier. Steve and his wife Kim, a former flight attendant, have flown the plane regularly since purchasing her in 1989. His backseater was his father-in-law, Don Radke from McKinney.
Dean announced the visiting aviators as they arrived and left.
Among the others were Hugh Hunton of Marshall, flying a Stearman biplane; Col. Bob Dunn of Nacogdoches, flying his open-cockpit PT-19 trainer; Tom Southern, flying a CAT 10 aerobatic trainer; Col. Stuart Milson, flying a Harvard trainer once flown by the Royal Canadian Air Force, and Larry Jack Richardson of Pittsburg, flying a former Army L-19 observation plane.

Airshow Coming

Board Moves....Adds to... Airshow Dates....Name Change
In order to maximize the promotional impact and attraction of the airshow, the Yamboree Board moved the dates of the Texas Yamboree Airshow to Sat/Sun Oct 4-5. A sponsors, volunteers, and performers reception is scheduled Friday evening Oct 3 prior to the show.
The name was changed to Texas Yamboree Airshow since the airshow is receiving national promotion and recognition. The new dates allow for a two-day event, plus weekend scheduling, which should bring even greater crowds to Gilmer for the East Texas Yamboree Festival.
With the Airshow at the beginning, the Fishing Tournament in the middle, and traditional festival events at the culmination ....these simple changes expand the Yamboree into a three-week instead of three-day festival.

The first show, in October 2000, honored Col. Bobby 'Silver Fox' Stephens, a Gilmer native, who directed the SR-71 Blackbird Program at Edwards AFB from its inception till its completion. Fox Stephens was the first military pilot to fly the Blackbird. On May 1, 1965, Stephens set the absolute world speed and altitude records in the SR-71/YF-12. Stephens is on the Walk of Honor for Test Pilots at Lancaster, CA, a street is named after him at Edwards AFB, and he is in the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame. Gilmer proudly renamed its municipal airport in honor of Col. Stephens......now Fox Stephens Field.....Many of Fox Stephens fellow test pilots attended the event held in Gilmer during the Yamboree festival.....and several military aircraft performed fly over's during the air show in Col. Stephens' honor. Bob Gilliland, original Lockheed test pilot for the Blackbird program, was keynote speaker.

The second show in October 2001 honored the 384th Bomb Group. The first and last bombs dropped on Germany during WW II were flown out of Grafton Underwood, England....home of the 384th Bomb Group. A Gilmer man....Dick Potter...flew in the 384th as Group Lead Navigator on several key missions. The 384th made Gilmer the site of a mini-reunion, and everyone had a great time. Gen Phil Ford, former 8th Air Force Commander, was keynote speaker. The modern day version of the 384th based at McConnel AFB pioneered the development of the B-1, so it was fitting to have the B-1 among the military jets doing fly overs as part of the show.

The last air show.... Friday, October 18, 2002..... honored the 98th Bomb Group......which participated in the Ploesti Oil Field Raids on August 1, 1943. A Gilmer man, Lt. Rex Lindsey, flew in the #2 B-24 on Col. Killer Cane's wing during the raid and afterward as they limped back toward home. Lindsey's plane...."Hadley's Harem"....was forced to ditch off the coast of Turkey after the last engine gave up. Lindsey and Hadley were killed in the ditching. In 1997, the wreckage was recovered from the Med and the remains of the cockpit crew were identified. Gilmer had a fitting military memorial and burial for the fallen crew.

Gilmer honored the members of the 98th during the show, and the 98th hosted a reunion in Gilmer. Assistant Secretary of the Air Force John Truesdell was keynote speaker or the Airshow Events

John paid special tribute to the veterans and families of the 98th Bomb Group who flew the mission from Benghazi, Lybia to Ploesti, Romania on August 1, 1943.......that fateful day in World War II when the Army Air Corps went after Hitler's Black Gold....the oil refineries. All veterans in attendance received special recognition. Truesdell inaugurated Gilmer's brand new Air Force ROTC unit by presenting an American flag that was flown over the Pentagon on Sept 11, 2002.
John's Dad was General Carl Truesdell, Commander of the 12th AF..........during WW II Gen Truesdell was CO of the 95th Bomb Group, flying out of England.

The 2002 show featured numerous military aircraft doing flyovers....but do to bad weather some of the scheduled were unable to attend. The three act headline showcard included Glider Pilot Manfred Radius, American Barnstormers' Walter Pierce with a lady wingwalker, T-6 Solo Acrobatics of Greg Shelton, Scott Rozzell and his Bell P-63 King Cobra, Joe Nemmer and his B-26 Bomber Spirit of Waco, and T-34/T-28/T-6/RV-6 formation routines, plus Commemorative Air Force Fly-Ins and Static Displays.

Don W. Williams of Gilmer shares

a few of the finer points of flying the PT-17 Stearman World War II vintage trainer with owner/pilot Steve DeWolf of Dallas.

DeWolf will fly his Stearman in the Yamboree …..marking his third Gilmer appearance.

The Stearman will be one of the featured aircraft in the show this year, including a Barnstormer Walt Pierce’s Aerobatic Routine with a Lady Wingwalker.

Don Williams flew the Stearman in the United States Navy during the War.

For a portion of his time in service, Don was military flight instructor in the Stearman……or as the US Navy called it the N3N, “Yellow Peril”.

"Stealth Fighter returns to Gilmer.......See the F-117 Fly-By promptly at 1 PM to kick off the Air Show........Do Not Be one minute late or you will miss it!!!!!"

Gilmer's East Texas Yamboree is one of Texas' oldest festivals....dating back to the Texas Centennial when Texas' governor encouraged communities to organize a festival denoting their agricultural highlight. During the depression years, the lowly yam or sweet potato was Upshur County's primary cash crop.........thus the Yamboree Festival. Featuring a junior livestock show and sale, two parades, band marching contest, fun run, bike-a-thon, carnival , gospel song fest, arts and crafts shows, the color and pageantry of a Festival Queens pageant and coronation, well known keynote speakers at the opening luncheon, street dance, and a country and western concert, topped off with a world class air show, Gilmer celebrated its 65th Yamboree Festival in 2002. All the schools in the county take a Yamboree holiday while more than 100,000 visitors enjoy the Three Day Festival.
